What Worked
Indian newsletter writers couldn't charge in INR on Substack (US-based). Built INR-native subscription with UPI payment. 200 newsletter writers migrated in 3 months after one viral tweet about Substack's INR conversion loss.
Biggest Mistake
Email-only platform. Indian creators also needed WhatsApp newsletter (broadcast lists) integration — built WhatsApp send feature, subscription included. Writers loved having both channels in one tool.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Substack and Beehiiv are US-dollar priced and not optimised for Indian payment rails (UPI/Razorpay)

- Newsletter economy is growing globally with newsletter-first media companies raising millions
Cons
- Substack and Beehiiv have strong network effects
- Building a creator base requires significant community investment
